Mens Cup team ease past gallant EBC Greenhouse
The first round of the 2014-15 cup competition proved challenging in many ways. First of all, the Boswells School hall was unavailable because of national training commitments. This also meant a few of our players were unavailable. Then, at late notice, our alternative venue Becketts Hall Brentwood also became unavailable and so we had to put the game on at Riverside Leisure Centre, Chelmsford.
Notwithstanding this, the game went ahead with TEVC easing through against a young and talented EBC Greenhouse team. EBC Greenhouse play in Mens Div III and gave a good account of themselves. They are very athletic will be a good test for our own up and coming “Junior” team.
Mens Cup Team 2014
From left to right: Kieran Good, Luke French, Dave Fenech (C),Tony Clarke (L), Lewis Fenech, Andy Sayward, Cameron Rhodes, Cameron Schutz. Front: James Bernardi
Set 1 started with good blocking from EBC on both wings but a string of good passing and hitting from our new “lefty” Cameron Rhodes, Luke French and Andy Saward rested control back by the first break (8-7). Andy then delivered a run of penetrating serves forcing EBC to time out at 13-7. Despite more late blocking from EBC this lead proved to be more than enough. “Old hand” Dave used his experience to tip deftly at the net to win the set 25-16.
Set 2 saw TEVC faced a rejuvenated EBC quickly losing the initiative 5-8. EBC had began passing and hitting with confidence and stretched the lead to 11-16 at the second time out. However, the experience of TEVC showed once again as they tightened up their game and fought their way back into the match with strong serving from both Andy and Dave. EBC took timeouts at 17-20 and 22 -22 to try and disrupt TEVC’s progress but it was clear TEVC now had the advantage and thanks to some effective hits from Lewis through 4 we finally edged the set 26-24.
Set 3 started a little scrappy but TEVC soon pulled away leading from 8-6 to 16-9 and finally 25-15.
This was the first match this group of TEVC players had played together but generally the team maintained good passing, timing and movement and had relatively few unforced errors. This was an expected but pleasing win and means we can now look forward to the next round which is an away fixture (at either London Aces or Stowe) on 8th November 2014.
