Juniors kick off the new season
Juniors had the hounour of kicking off the new season for TEVC with a triangular match against Richmond VC2 and London Aces. Due to new teams entering the league the structure has changed. There are now three leagues in Mens Div III helping to cut journey times to away fixtures.
It was “new look” Juniors team too with new U15 players stepping up and a new match day coach, Rebecca Saunders.
Back Row: Matthew Parish, Oliver Prudence, Matthew Ketley, Cameron Schutz, Daniel Sach, Richard Ferguson
Front Row: Ross Papworth, George Hayden, Henry Blanks (L), Ashley Toomey, Thomas Ellis, Rebecca Saunders (Coach)
First up was Richmond VC2. We lost 20-15, 18-25 and 23-25 but for a little more penetration on hitting, it could have been a lot closer. The team looked solid and was always in the hunt to take a set or two. The defensive unit played well though a slight improvement in first pass consistency would undoubtedly lead to more productive attacks.
The 3rd set could have gone either way. So let’s look forward to the return fixture as it’s only a few weeks away on 16th November at UEL.
London Aces were a step up in quality and height. The result 18-25, 17-25 and 12-25 was a fair reflection on the the strength of the teams. Again there were some great rallies and saves by Juniors as they battled to compete. London Aces were just a bit too strong and maintained their form throughout the match. Juniors showed enough again to see that they have the skills and should improve during the season. If the lads work hard in training they should be confident that they will improve on their 47 points in the return fixture.
TEVC Juniors fielded some of the youngest players in the league and demonstrated showed some great plays and potential. There is a learning curve in the National League and the tough competition is the best place to help the team improve. As last year’s Juniors squad showed, great strides can be made so come on Juniors, let’s see you continue to push hard for that first league match win.
